Bunk bed shopping - 10 point safety checklist to protect your children
November 5th, 2007
Every year thousands of children are admitted to hospital emergency rooms due to incidents involving bunk beds involving improper use, manufacturing, or set up. If your follow our 10 point safety checklist, bunk beds can still be a great bedding solution for your children:
Reputable manufacturer
Look for manufacturers that are established, and have a long history of manufacturing bunk beds. A good manufacturer will also stand behind their product by providing a lifetime warranty.
ASTM and CPSC guidelines
Ask the retailer if it meets the voluntary safety guidelines of the American Standards of Testing and Materials and the minimum safety standards of the Consumer Product Safety Commission. If it does, you’ll know that the bed meets all current and reasonable safety standards.
Strong frame construction
Examine and test the durability and strength of the bunk bed frame. It should easily hold a parents weight - climb on it and wiggle the frame a bit. A good bunk bed with remain firmly grounded without movement or noise.

Only rounded edges
Check the entire bed construction for smoothness of materials and fasteners. There should be no sharp edges or protruding points anywhere in the construction.
Measure the safety rails
Safety rails should run on both sides of the top bunk, and the lower rail should be no higher than 3 1/2 inches above the top of the mattress height - any higher and your children could slip underneath it. Also make sure the top rail is at least 5 inches above the mattress top to prevent your child from rolling over the safety rails.
Ensure proper mattress fit
Strangulation deaths have occurred in the US when children fall through openings between the mattress and the frame during the night. Make sure the mattress opening snugly fits the mattress without a lot adjustment room. If the mattress has a gap greater than 3 inches from any side of the mattress to the bed frame, headboard or footboard - it does not fit properly.
Sturdy ladder construction
Make sure the ladder in well constructed and is firmly attached and bolted to the bed frame. Test it out with your own weight - if it moves around it is not safe.
Sturdy mattress support
A lot of injuries are caused by children in the lower bunks pushing up on the underside of the top bunk and dislodging the mattress or support frame. Ensure the top bunk has sturdy mattress supports that are secured to the bed frame with bolts or screws. You don’t want a floating board support system, as these will move around and can possibly fall through the opening.
Repair and maintenance
Immediately replace or repair any loose or missing fasteners on the bed. Periodically check the tightness of fasteners holding the bed together, as well as the cross support rails holding the upper mattress.
Safe use
Teach your children not to push up on the underside of the bed, or to climb on it like a jungle gym. Proper safety is important at all times, and you may wish to also use a night light near the ladder so children can see the ladder steps in the dark.
If you follow these basic tips then you should get years of safe enjoyment out of your new bunk bed. For more bunk bed resources and tips you can visit

Bunk Beds Add More Than Space To Childrens Rooms
November 5th, 2007
Many children like the idea of having a bunk bed in their room - metal frame, designer, wood - it doesn’t matter. The appeal comes for a number of reasons and these beds can even be ideal for youngsters who are the only children in their family.
Wood/Metal Bunk Bed
Buy New: $425.00 (On sale from $510.00)

A good bunk bed set up will give an only child a choice of where to sleep and allow them a little more room to roam at night. While this might not be what Mom and Dad have in mind, its a simple fact that one mattress might be more comfortable on a certain night than another.
With that in mind, no matter the style bed thats chosen, the mattress purchase is important. Getting a good nights sleep is not only vital for an adult to function, its especially so for a child. Since children’s bodies are constantly changing with growth, allowing the child to pick out the mattress is not a bad idea. If going with bunk beds, consider the child’s top two choices unless, of course, there’s a sibling that will be sharing the room.
With the number of bunk bed styles available, these old-fashion space savers can work in rooms for boys, girls and even both. Suitable for younger children and even teens, the design workability for each age group will depend on the bed chosen.
When looking for bunk beds for older children, allow them to get in on the purchase. Trendy metal frame beds are ideal for their durability and their more modernized, sleek look. Plus, these beds generally hold up better than wood frame ones when the “sticker stage” strikes.
The advantages of bunk beds or bunk bed designed rooms are many. There are even specific designs with the bottom bed and the top bunk being formed into an “L” so a desk or even dresser can be placed underneath. This helps create a working space for the youngsters in the room and can provide a good use of space.
For those considering bunk beds for either a single child or two who share a room, here are some of the top reasons to consider the purchase:
* For a single child, the bunk allows an alternative location for the child to sleep that doesn’t involve Mom and Dads bed!
* Bunk beds also provide a great extra sleeping space for company or sleepover guests.
* For families with more than one child, bunk beds, even if they’re placed in a room thats exclusively for one child, allow the kids to “sleepover” once in a while. This is particularly good for families where the younger child is attached to the older and tends to sneak in and squeeze space at night.
Full, queen and king sized beds also provide a lot of benefits for youngsters, but bunks free up more space. Considering young children will also require desk space, dressers and play room, the space savings makes them ideal for little ones and even teens, perhaps especially teens.
Just remember when looking for bunks, the most important things are the mattresses. Buy a good mattress and a solid frame and the beds should serve your children for years to come.
Luxurious Decorating Trends Your Neighbors Will Envy
August 23rd, 2007

(ARA) – With the housing market in flux, more and more people are looking at the potential beauty of their current home. Changes can be as simple as redecorating and updating your home’s style. Some of the season’s most popular trends are producing surprisingly luxurious results that are much easier to implement than you might think.
“You no longer need to move or even do a heavy remodel to breathe fresh life into your home’s décor,” comments Ken Locicero, a Divisional Merchandise Manager for ShopNBC. “Subtle changes such as adding a touch of color or focal piece of furniture can really give your home some personality.”
Color
When deciding on color, it’s easy to stay in the safety zone and stick with standard neutral tones. But in reality, more people are using colors that pop. “What’s really popular right now is to shed the boring colors that can seem drab and try spicy colors,” adds Locicero.
Chili-pepper red is the trend for this fall and into the holiday season. Look for this color on everything from wall decorations to pillow accents to glassware. Even red lighting is becoming a popular decorating accent. Try combining other zesty colors such as rich yellows, organic greens and fiery oranges to achieve a look that is sure to get attention.
Decor
“It’s really amazing what a few accents in a home can do to an entire room,” says Locicero. “Adding a throw and some pillows, along with perhaps a vase and wall hanging can transform a room to have a vintage country influence, a modern feel or even have Asian-infused design elements.”
One piece of decor that is really popular for all design types is the mirror. Hang a large mirror in a room as a focal point that not only opens up the space, but distributes the light beautifully. Or, for something different, hang a wall with several smaller mirrors for an interesting decorative element that draws in the eye. Shapes, sizes and frames come in an infinite amount of styles so they can coordinate with your overall theme.
Bedroom Furniture
In the bedroom the trend is luxury. Homeowners are realizing the value in investing in this room and making it a sanctuary for the senses. “Silk and high thread count sheets are hugely popular for the ultimate sleeping experience,” comments Locicero. “Bedroom pieces, such as pillows and curtains, are being accented with crystals and tassels for a lavish and indulgent look.”
Dining Room
The dining room is often overlooked as a place for decoration between holiday occasions. But the newest trend in home décor is decorating your tabletop throughout the year. Guests are sure to comment on tabletop décor as they are used to only seeing it during special occasions.
“Filling a large vase with flowers or filling a crystal bowl with seasonal fruit are both very easy ways to decorate the table and project a very affluent decor in your dining room,” says Ken Locicero. “You could even choose a variety of candles and place in a circular design. Have some fun with it! Tabletop decorations no longer need to be holiday-specific so you can project a little bit of your own personality into your home’s style.”

Comfy and hard to part with… May 23, 2006

We bought this bed for another toddler that was staying with us for a week. My daughter insisted on sleeping in it as soon as it was filled and ready to sleep on, and she still rather sleep on it instead of her very-cool big girl bed!!
Bed is easy to inflate, and inflates in seconds. Comes with a soft, plush cover which secures on with elastic straps (very neat feature) so it won’t come loose during the night. Raised sides prevent falling out. Deflates in seconds, folds nicely into the provided bag.
We have definitely gotten our money’s worth! Looking forward to using it when we travel. Highly recommend!!

This bed is an excellent product. I was recently very worried about traveling and leaving my 3 and 5 year old kids at my parents house for 2 weeks as they are always reluctant to spend the night there. They would have to accommodate on someone else’s bed or on a couch , so there would be no sense of security while mom was gone. I bought these beds to give them a sense of belonging and ownership. Since it is deflatable you don’t have to worry about it taking any space except while they are actually sleeping. They were ecstatic to realize they had their own beds and could take them to any sleepover in the future. The inflating and deflating is a piece of cake for any grownup and is extremely exciting for kids watching a piece of plastic turn into a bed in less then a minute. The bed is very sturdy yet very comfy since you can adjust the air pressure easily. The size is perfect and the included bedsheet with the star print is really cute and gives the bed a warm feeling. When deflated it goes in the included drawstring bag along with the bedsheet and air pump. Even the kids are able to haul the bag around. Now my kids love to spend the night at my parents just to get a chance to use the beds!
worked well on our trip January 4, 2007

Previously, I had used a toddler travel bed, not an air bed. The Toddler Travel Trundle was very uncomfortable for the kids, so I tried this. It worked very well and was much more comfortable. The pump is very heavy, so is the deflated bed, so we mailed it to our destination ahead of time.

Our grandson (age 2 1/2) was coming to visit - purchase of a crib not economical because he will be too big for it next visit. He took to the Aerobed so well. We put it on the floor in our computer room, packed pillows around it and he surprised his parents by adjusting to it right away. Just the right size for him for a couple of years when he comes to visit - good price and can probably be resold when he gets too big for it. Easy blow up and close up.
GREAT bed October 7, 2002

I bought this bed for my 3 year old for travel/vacations. He had been using a toddler travel bed, but he would roll over the sides of it and end up on the floor. This bed blows up within a minute with the electric pump (enclosed) and is a breeze to deflate. This bed comes with a cover, so your child isn’t laying on plastic. The cover comes off for easy washing. This bed will take standard twin sheets, so no expense of buying special sheets. My son loves it so much that he will ask to sleep in this instead of his regular bed.
